Why 'students will understand X' wrecks a lesson plan

What makes this hard

Order a lesson plan around 'understand' and you get a document where activities and objectives never connect — which activity produces the understanding, and how you check it at the end, are both blank. An unobservable objective can't anchor a design.

Item writing has the same trap. Ask for questions and you get answer keys only. What a classroom actually uses is the explanation of why each wrong answer is tempting — you need to know why a student picked (c) for the next lesson to change.

What to add to the request

1. Turn objectives into action verbs

Instead of 'understands', write what the student does: 'reads the slope off a graph', 'finds the intersection of two graphs'. Now every objective can be paired with an activity or question that checks it, and objectives with no check get filtered out.

2. Make it budget time in minutes

Lesson plans collapse where activity time runs short. Require minutes for opening, development, and closing, and a check that they sum to the period length. Ask for one line of contingency for activities that finish early, and the document becomes usable in a real classroom.

3. Require three things per test item

• The answer — obviously
• The explanation — why it's correct
• The distractor rationale — why each wrong option is tempting. This is half of item writing

Checklist for writing it yourself

1. 1Are objectives written as action verbs — no 'understand/know' left

5. 5Did you forbid copying others' passages and figures — with slots marked where sources need checking

One more line worth adding: don't accept recommendations of textbooks or courses by name — ask for materials described by what they contain, and verify existence yourself.
